Everyone alive may carry DNA from a ‘ghost lineage’ of human ancestors

In an exciting new study, scientists have discovered that modern genomes may hold traces of 'ghost ancestors'—ancient human lineages that we have no fossil records for. This research reveals that our family tree is much more complex than previously thought, with interbreeding occurring between archaic hominins like Neanderthals and Denisovans and our own ancestors. Using a novel method called TRACE, the team found that about 2 percent of non-African DNA comes from these mysterious lineages, some of which diverged over 500,000 years ago. This groundbreaking work opens up new avenues for understanding our genetic history and the evolution of human beings.
