Black holes may spit out nearly as much matter as they swallow

Astronomers have discovered a fascinating cosmic digestive system around black holes, showing they can expel large amounts of matter even when they seem faint. This research, led by the University of Warwick, reveals that black holes are not just cosmic gluttons but complex systems that process and eject material. Observations of the black hole Swift J1727.8−1613 during a spectacular outburst in 2023 provided a rare glimpse into this feeding process. Surprisingly, even after the outburst faded, strong winds continued to blow gas away, suggesting that black holes might be less efficient eaters than we thought.
