Milky Way swallowed another galaxy, influencing its future history

Scientists have found evidence that about 11.8 billion years ago, the Milky Way absorbed a much smaller galaxy. At that time, the universe was still quite young, having only experienced about 15 percent of its current age. This discovery marks the oldest known galactic merger in our galaxy's history, significantly impacting its later development. It shows that the Milky Way grew not just by forming new stars, but also by merging with smaller galaxies drawn in by its gravity.
