Scientists find a human-only gene that may help explain our brainpower

Researchers have discovered that human microglia mature much more slowly than those in other animals, which could be key to our cognitive abilities. This slow development is linked to a human-specific gene called SRGAP2, which is more abundant in microglia than in neurons. Microglia play a crucial role in shaping brain circuits during development, influencing which synapses are kept or eliminated. The findings suggest that this gene helps coordinate the slow maturation of brain cells, contributing to what makes human cognition unique.
