Chemistry textbooks have been teaching the inductive effect wrong for nearly a century

So here's something fascinating - researchers from Cardiff University and the University of Newcastle have discovered that chemistry textbooks have been explaining the inductive effect incorrectly for almost 100 years. The inductive effect is a foundational concept in organic chemistry that describes how atoms influence electron distribution in molecules, and it's taught to virtually every chemistry student beyond GCSE level. The traditional explanation says this influence travels through three or four bonds and gradually weakens, but the new evidence shows it actually stops after just one bond in neutral molecules. This correction is already having real impact - two A-level exam boards have announced reviews of their teaching materials and directly cited this research. While this might seem like a small adjustment, it could reshape how chemists understand molecular structure and reactivity across countless applications from medicines to advanced materials.
