The Atlantic hurricane season has been so quiet it’s unprecedented

I find it fascinating that for the first time since records began, no hurricanes have formed in the Atlantic through the end of September. This quiet season is largely thanks to a powerful El Niño, which is suppressing hurricane activity in the Atlantic while boosting it in the eastern Pacific. Normally, September is peak hurricane time, but this year the usual wind patterns that help storms develop are stronger and keep things calm. It’s a relief for communities hit hard in recent years, and while a late-season hurricane is still possible, this season is already one for the history books.
