Two research teams have traced mammalian embryo development at the level of individual cells. So, rather than seeing an embryo as one growing whole, their maps show how its cells change and take on distinct roles over time. This cell-by-cell view can help scientists understand how tissues and organs begin to form. And here's the thing: these maps could give future studies a clearer way to investigate normal development and what happens when it goes awry.
