So: astronomers have found three actively feeding supermassive black holes in galaxy J0148-4214, more than 12.5 billion light-years away. We see the galaxy as it was just 1.2 billion years after the Big Bang, and two of its black holes sit close together near the centre while the third lies farther out. Their masses range from about 600,000 to 80 million times that of the Sun, and the smallest is feeding at an exceptionally high rate. This rare discovery offers fresh clues about how black holes grew and came together in the early universe, with possible mergers ahead for future gravitational-wave observatories to detect.
