Oxygen collisions reveal clues to the universe’s earliest matter

Here’s a fascinating result: scientists have found strong evidence that collisions between oxygen nuclei can create quark-gluon plasma, the exotic matter that filled the universe just after the Big Bang. In the STAR experiment at RHIC, the oxygen nuclei collided at lower energies than in earlier studies of this small collision system. The key clue is jet quenching, where energetic particle sprays lose energy as they pass through the dense matter. By finding this signature under more modest conditions, researchers can better pin down when this glimpse of the infant universe takes shape.
