Carbon radicals from irreversible light-driven charge transfer

Here’s an exciting new way to make carbon-centred radicals: researchers have created copper complexes that use visible light to trigger the process. The light-driven charge transfer irreversibly breaks a carbon–sulfur bond in the ligand, releasing radicals through a low-barrier pathway. The approach works with a broad range of alkyl groups, including fluoroalkyl groups and even methyl, largely independently of the starting sulfones’ reduction potentials. The team used the chemistry to functionalize arenes and alkynes, and to combine perfluorocyclobutyl and iodine groups on alkenes.
