Scientists left this farm field alone. Thousands of orchids appeared

So, researchers led by Professor Carl Sayer discovered that abandoned farmland can naturally transform into a vibrant wildflower meadow over time. After ceasing farming in 2005, the field in North Norfolk flourished with diverse plant life, including rare orchids. This study challenges the idea that restoring biodiversity requires expensive seed mixes, suggesting instead that patience and allowing nature to take its course can be more effective. The findings are particularly timely as governments seek sustainable ways to enhance biodiversity across former farmland.
