First albatross chicks fly from Pukekura/Tairaoa Head

It's such an exciting time at Pukekura/Tairaoa Head as the first royal albatross chicks, like Āwheo, take to the skies! These magnificent seabirds are among the largest in the world, and watching them practice their flying skills is truly a sight to behold. The dedicated rangers hope this season will match last year's record of 38 fledglings, and it's heartwarming to see their hard work pay off. Once they leave the nest, these young birds will embark on incredible journeys across the Pacific Ocean, adapting to life at sea for the next five years.
