From hunter to protector: Indigenous fishers transform shark conservation in Colombia

In the remote Colombian region of La Guajira, Indigenous Wayuu fishers are partnering with marine biologists to document and protect shark populations - a remarkable shift from hunting to conservation. Wilfrido Arends, a local fisher known as "Caracas," now leads research efforts with Proyecto Puyuii, carefully recording data on endangered species like blacknose sharks while implementing sustainable practices such as larger-mesh nets and safe release techniques. Despite a 2021 Colombian law banning targeted shark fishing, the meat remains a vital protein source in this food-insecure region, so the project focuses on making sharks worth more alive than dead through sustainable tourism alternatives. The collaboration shows how traditional communities and scientists can work together to protect marine life while respecting cultural practices and addressing real economic needs on the ground.
