6,000 people, 27 villages & one zero-waste mission

In the remote Himalayan village of Zemithang, Arunachal Pradesh, something really beautiful is happening - 6,000 people across 27 villages have united around a zero-waste mission that's simply stunning. Every Sunday, residents gather to wash, sort and segregate their waste into 22 categories, with each household contributing just ₹50 to keep things running. Women riders then collect all the sorted materials and deliver them to recycling centres, turning everyday rubbish into recovered resources. Since Merwyn Coutinho started the Himalayan Fringes Project in 2020, it's already impacted over 20,000 people and recovered nearly 90 tonnes of waste - no fancy tech required, just genuine community spirit and shared responsibility.
