Former industrial dump transforms into thriving wetland hosting nearly two-thirds of UK's black-necked grebes

What started as a dumping ground for canal dredging material has become something truly remarkable - a nature reserve that now hosts 64% of all UK breeding black-necked grebes. The Woolston Eyes Nature Reserve near Manchester was shaped over decades by material from the Manchester Ship Canal construction, and in 1979 a conservation group took over its management to nurture the developing wetland ecosystems. Since 2021, extensive restoration work has created the perfect habitat for these beautiful waterfowl, with nesting numbers skyrocketing from just 4 pairs in 2023 to 35 pairs by 2025. Beyond the grebes, the reserve has become a sanctuary for numerous other vulnerable species, proving that when we give nature a real chance to thrive, the results can be genuinely extraordinary.
