One Mount Etna eruption took weeks. Another happened in hours

By studying crystals and microscopic gas bubbles trapped inside them using Raman spectroscopy, they reconstructed two ancient eruptions and found that one magma batch rose from 22 km deep but then stalled for weeks at shallower depths, while another eruption happened in just hours. Now, this matters because understanding these different volcanic processes - how magma moves, how gases separate, and what triggers explosions - helps scientists improve their models for predicting future eruption risks. And here's the thing: the team's breakthrough shows that carbon dioxide, not just water, can drive explosive volcanic activity, which is a relatively new insight that's changing how we think about volcanoes altogether.
