Bird-watchers unite to save New Zealand's rarest bittern

New Zealand's great bittern - known as Matuku-hūrepo - is one of the country's most endangered birds, with fewer than a thousand left in the wild. Amateur bird-watchers are being called upon to help track the species during breeding season, when the male birds' distinctive booming calls can be heard up to five kilometres away across wetlands. The Love Bittern project coordinates this annual count to avoid double-counting, and founder Wendy Ambury is hoping to recruit 1,200 volunteers this season - double the usual 400 to 500 participants. The challenge is urgent because over 90 percent of New Zealand's wetlands have already disappeared, destroying the habitat these shy birds desperately need to survive.
