Encoded and non-genetic protein variants expand human functional proteome

So here's something that really caught my attention - researchers have discovered over 13,000 protein variants coexisting in human tissues that weren't fully understood before. What's fascinating is that these variants come from multiple sources: genetic mutations, yes, but also translational errors and other non-genetic mechanisms that actually create functional protein diversity. The team found that mistranslated proteins appear at frequencies matching human population genetics, and even more intriguingly, these non-genetic variations seem to explore protein sequence space in ways the genetic code alone couldn't achieve. This opens up a whole new understanding of human protein complexity and suggests we have way more functional diversity in our proteomes than we previously realized.
