Underground hydrogen could spur a green-energy revolution — if companies can find it

Energy prospectors in nearly 30 countries are now hunting for geological hydrogen deposits - gas trapped deep underground that could revolutionize our fight against climate change. When burned, hydrogen produces only water vapour with zero carbon emissions, and a 2024 analysis suggests Earth's subsurface contains tens of trillions of tonnes of it. If even a small fraction can be extracted profitably, geological hydrogen could meet clean energy needs for 200 years, potentially at or below fossil fuel costs - which is why venture capitalists have already invested nearly $500 million since 2023. So here's the thing: nobody actually knows yet if there are deposits large enough to match the hype, which is why companies are racing to drill in geological formations across Canada, Africa, and Australia, with key findings expected within months.
