What if 'consciousness' isn't real?

So here's the thing - consciousness researchers gathering in Santiago are asking some of the toughest questions in science: when does consciousness emerge, which animals have it, and could machines? The problem is, we've never really agreed on what 'consciousness' even means - in some fields it means sentience, in others awareness or experience, which makes the whole conversation pretty muddy. Now, we often try to explain it by pointing to moments that 'feel like something' - tasting a strawberry, feeling sand between your toes - but this concept hasn't always been central to how humans think about the mind. And here's what fascinates me: different languages and cultures describe mentality in completely different ways - the Mapudungun language, for instance, includes ideas about interdependence with others and nature that English 'consciousness' simply doesn't capture.
