Scientists astonished by discovery that rewrites Earth's origin story

Researchers from ETH Zurich have turned planetary science on its head by showing that Earth formed entirely from material in the inner Solar System - not from a mix of inner and outer regions as previously thought. Using a fresh statistical approach to analyze isotope ratios from ten different meteorite systems, Paolo Sossi and Dan Bower found that less than two percent of Earth's building material came from beyond Jupiter, if any at all. This challenges decades of assumptions about how water and other volatile substances arrived on our planet. The discovery suggests Jupiter acted as an incredibly effective barrier early in the Solar System's history, completely separating two distinct material reservoirs - and it means Earth grew in a surprisingly stable, isolated environment.
