Map of brain 'microproteins' could offer new clues to Alzheimer's disease

Researchers have discovered over 1,000 previously overlooked microproteins in human brain tissue - the tiniest molecules that standard detection methods usually miss entirely. What makes this exciting is that dozens of these hidden proteins showed altered expression in people with Alzheimer's disease, suggesting they could unlock new understanding of how neurodegeneration happens. The team combined advanced techniques like mass spectrometry, RNA sequencing, and ribosomal profiling to create the largest atlas of microproteins in Alzheimer's to date, identifying 4,321 in total. By making this data publicly available, scientists can now design experiments to validate these proteins and potentially discover entirely new mechanisms of aging and disease.
