Scientists solve mystery behind massive snowfall that added 695 billion tons of ice to Antarctica

Scientists have discovered that a warming tropical ocean pool triggered enormous snowstorms over East Antarctica between 2021 and 2023, resulting in a net ice gain of 695 billion tons - the largest recorded by satellite monitoring. The mechanism works through something called a Rossby wave train, which reorganized moisture transport and created atmospheric rivers carrying vast amounts of water vapor toward the frozen continent. What's really fascinating is that this ice-mass gain event wasn't primarily driven by human-caused global warming - only about 9% of the snowfall anomaly came from CO2-influenced atmospheric moistening. The research suggests these tropical warm pool events occur roughly once per decade, and we might see another similar event around 2031-33, making it crucial to keep monitoring since Antarctica's ice sheet is one of the biggest wild cards in predicting future sea-level rise.
