OpenAI made waves last week by claiming its AI had solved one of the Millennium Prize Problems - proving that the famous Navier-Stokes equations can produce physically impossible results under certain extreme conditions. The breakthrough is genuinely impressive, but here's the thing: the equations break down at a scale so tiny - around 70 nanometres - that treating fluid as molecules rather than a continuous substance makes way more sense anyway. So while this is a beautiful mathematical achievement, it doesn't necessarily reshape how we actually model real-world fluid flow in engineering or physics. The takeaway is that AI's mathematical prowess is remarkable, but the practical limits of these ancient equations were already pretty well understood by researchers working on the ground.
