Smart radar sensors are protecting migrating elephants from deadly train collisions in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has been losing wild elephants to train collisions at an alarming rate - 21 deaths in 2025 alone - so engineers are deploying a clever new technology to save them. Instead of mounting cameras on trains that can't see around curves, they're installing AI-powered sensors along the railway tracks that detect ground vibrations and animal sounds to identify approaching elephants. When an elephant is detected, the system sends alerts to train drivers with enough warning to slow down and prevent a collision. This radar solution is just one piece of a bigger plan that also includes clearing vegetation along tracks, restoring water sources, and replanting forests so elephants stay in their natural habitats rather than crossing railway lines.
