So here's the thing - we tend to think of seashells as harmless beach souvenirs, but scientists studying coastlines in India and beyond have discovered they actually play a meaningful role in coastal ecosystems. Research from Portugal showed that where tourism increased by 2.74 times, shell abundance dropped by 2.62 times, suggesting that large-scale shell removal can genuinely affect beach sediment dynamics and erosion patterns. And it gets more interesting - India's 110+ species of hermit crabs depend on these shells for survival since they don't have hard abdomens of their own. While taking one shell won't cause measurable damage, the cumulative effect of thousands of visitors removing shells from beaches really does matter to the health of these delicate ecosystems.
