Miami's fairy godmother for undocumented domestic workers

Karla De Anda has become a lifeline for undocumented domestic workers in Miami, earning the nickname 'fairy godmother' for her tireless rescue efforts - though the title sits uncomfortably with her because no one was there to save her when she needed it. Working from her personal phone with no formal organization behind her, she responds to desperate calls at any hour, helping women escape exploitation, abuse, and wage theft that often goes unreported out of fear of deportation. Her activism grew from her own experience as a nanny working 15 hours a day for $5 an hour, and today she founded The Right to Freedom Network, made up largely of survivors of labor trafficking who understand what these women face. She guides vulnerable women through an unfamiliar legal system, connecting them with lawyers, helping file complaints, and interpreting the abuse they've suffered - often in languages they barely speak and in a country whose laws remain a mystery to them. Now more than ever, as immigration enforcement has tightened, Karla stands as quite possibly the only door these women can knock on when their employers have bought them one-way tickets home and their situation becomes unbearable.
