New York City transforms Park Avenue with trees, greenery, and protected bike lanes

New York City has unveiled an exciting plan to restore Park Avenue to its original character from before the 1920s by adding trees, benches, and a protected two-way bike lane across 11 blocks. Mayor Mamdani and the Department of Transportation listened to New Yorkers who wanted more green space and safer conditions for cyclists, transforming the wide avenue into a more people-centered corridor. The redesign converts underused median space into vibrant public areas with expanded seating, plantings, and public art while removing one travel lane in each direction. This major infrastructure upgrade is perfectly timed with the MTA's rehabilitation of the historic Grand Central Terminal train shed below, creating a wonderful opportunity to modernize the iconic thoroughfare while prioritizing pedestrians and cyclists.
