Scientists have captured a rare and detailed look at a subduction zone beneath the Pacific Northwest that is actively breaking apart. This tectonic process, which usually lasts millions of years, is now showing signs of ending as the oceanic plate tears into smaller pieces. Using seismic imaging, researchers observed large faults and fractures, revealing a slow 'train derailment' rather than a sudden stop.
