Ocean heatwaves are hiding months of extra warming

I find it fascinating that marine heatwaves have been studied as isolated events, but new research shows they are actually part of longer warming periods. This study reveals that the heat exposure before and after these heatwaves can be just as significant, sometimes even more so. By analyzing decades of data from U.S. estuaries, scientists found that total heat exposure has been underestimated by over 150%. So: we need to rethink how we measure marine heat stress to better protect ocean ecosystems.
