An open-source tree map inspires Berliners to water their urban forest

Here’s a lovely idea taking root in Berlin: residents are adopting street trees and watering them through the hotter months. CityLAB Berlin’s Gieß den Kiez map tracks more than 900,000 trees, showing when each was last watered and which ones need help most. More than 12,000 volunteers use it to coordinate their efforts, adding a friendly, game-like nudge to caring for the city’s urban forest. And here's the thing: every watering helps trees cool neighbourhoods while bringing people outdoors and connecting them with their community.
