Antarctica’s wind farm saves 122,000 gallons of diesel

So: three sturdy wind turbines on Ross Island have helped power McMurdo Station and Scott Base for 15 years, saving an estimated 122,000 gallons of diesel. Built to withstand fierce winds and temperatures of -30°C, they’ve shown that renewable energy can thrive even in Antarctica’s extreme conditions. The wind farm has also helped cut operating costs and prevented an estimated 1,200 tons of carbon dioxide emissions. And here’s the next step: larger turbines and battery storage are planned to replace the originals when they reach the end of their working lives in 2030.
