California brought back beavers after 70 years, with remarkable results

So, a centuries-old beaver pictograph helped inspire the Tule River Tribe to rethink how it could respond to drought. Working with California wildlife officials and other tribal partners, the state began relocating beavers again in 2021, after nearly 75 years. Seven beavers were released in 2023, and by September 2024, 28 had made new homes across five sites. At Tásmam Koyóm, their 328-foot dam has helped create wetlands and increase water coverage by more than 22% - nature’s engineers are already making a splash.
