Nearly half a million fewer people owe the public sector

The number of people in Denmark with public-sector debt has fallen by 454,000, from more than 1.1 million in 2023 to 687,000. The Danish Debt Collection Agency says people can pay through its online debt overview, while some small debts may be written off or collected through tax refunds or wage deductions. Since 2023, 690,000 people have become debt-free, though new debts mean the overall number has dropped by less. Living residents still owed around 108 billion Danish kroner in total, according to the agency’s June 2025 figures.
