Webb finds an atmosphere on a scorching lava world

So, here’s a surprising find: astronomers have detected evidence of an atmosphere around HD 3167 b, a rocky super-Earth 154 light-years away that circles its star every day. Webb’s observations of the planet as it passed behind its star helped researchers estimate its temperature using mid-infrared light. The findings suggest an atmosphere may be moving heat from the planet’s scorching dayside to its nightside. Though far too hot for life, this lava world can help scientists understand how rocky planets gain and retain atmospheres - and may offer clues to Earth’s early history.
