Bengaluru’s overlooked grassland is now a 5,678-acre conservation reserve

So: what looked like empty land on Bengaluru’s outskirts is a thriving grassland and wetland ecosystem, now officially protected as the Greater Hesaraghatta Grassland Conservation Reserve. After nearly two decades of research, advocacy and legal efforts, Karnataka notified 5,678 acres in February 2025. The landscape supports more than 285 bird species, including migratory visitors and the critically endangered lesser florican, as well as butterflies, amphibians and other wildlife. And here's the thing: it also helps sustain Bengaluru’s water system as part of the Arkavathy River and Thippagondanahalli Reservoir catchments.
