Margaret Hamilton, Apollo software pioneer, dies at 90

I’m struck by how Margaret Hamilton’s pioneering software helped guide Apollo 11 safely to the Moon. Just before the 1969 landing, an overloaded onboard computer raised an alarm, but her team’s priority-driven software kept the crucial landing tasks running. Hamilton led the MIT engineers who developed software for NASA’s Apollo missions and helped bring the term “software engineering” into use. Honoured with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2016, she leaves a remarkable legacy that continues to inspire.
