Semiconductors enter insulator territory

So, a material once thought to be an electrical insulator has now been shown to act as a semiconductor. Researchers report a bandgap greater than 7 electronvolts, the largest recorded for a semiconductor so far. That unusually wide bandgap could make the material useful in electronics that need to withstand high voltages or temperatures, as well as in optics. It is an intriguing shift into a region long considered the domain of insulators.
