Woody blankets deployed on Arctic permafrost to reduce carbon emissions

A Canadian start-up is testing insulating blankets made from wood shavings, soil, native seeds and coconut husks to stabilize thawing Arctic permafrost. In its first trial at an eroding site in Canada’s Northwest Territories, the untreated edge retreated by five metres over the summer, while the covered area showed no measurable retreat. The early result is promising, though researchers caution that it comes from just one site and one season. The company estimates the approach could prevent substantial emissions if used widely, but both the carbon savings and the feasibility of treating thousands of sites need further study.
