Cherokee girls win legal rights for a sacred river

It began when Cherokee girls spotted visitors disturbing river stones and learned that the eastern hellbender salamander’s habitat was at risk. Their campaign grew into a historic effort to protect the Oconaluftee River, known as the Longperson, and after a year and a half of community organizing, tribal council unanimously recognized five inherent rights for the river. Now, the river has the right to exist and regenerate, flow freely, shelter wildlife, and be protected from pollution and under Cherokee law. And here’s the thing: the girls are already pushing for a plan to remove a dam that blocks fish migration and help other Indigenous nations learn from their work.
