Giant tortoises now outnumber people in the Seychelles

So: a new survey estimates that around 180,000 Aldabra giant tortoises live on the Seychelles’ Aldabra Atoll, more than the country’s human population. The population appears healthy and stable, a remarkable recovery from fewer than 1,000 tortoises after centuries of hunting and exploitation. Researchers used a more sophisticated method that accounts for animals hidden by dense vegetation, so the higher estimate does not mean the population has nearly doubled since the previous survey. Protection measures, including the atoll’s nature reserve status, show how long-term conservation can help a species thrive.
