India releases two captive-bred bustards into the wild

India has taken an encouraging step in its effort to bring the critically endangered Great Indian Bustard back to the wild. Two male birds, raised through a conservation-breeding programme in Rajasthan, were released at Desert National Park. Before their release, they spent time in a spacious rewilding aviary to build flight strength and prepare for life beyond captivity. This first major test of the programme’s rewilding approach follows years of work by scientists and conservation teams, with 97 birds now held at breeding facilities.
