Local voices help conservation succeed around the world

So: a University of Sydney review of more than 70 studies found that conservation success often depends less on funding than on the involvement of local communities. Across examples from Papua New Guinea to Canada, three factors stood out: valuing local knowledge alongside science, involving communities in decisions, and adapting management to local conditions. In Papua New Guinea, villages have sustained healthy coral reefs by periodically closing fishing areas, a practice rooted in community life and shared responsibility. These bright spots show that nature and people can thrive under pressure - and offer hopeful lessons for conservation elsewhere.
