Northern lights brighten skies across the UK

What a lovely sight: the northern lights lit up skies across the UK on Friday and Saturday evening. The aurora borealis was spotted as far south as Devon, Hampshire and Kent, well beyond its usual visibility near the Arctic Circle and northern Scotland. The Met Office says clear skies could bring more chances to see the display until Tuesday, particularly in Scotland and at similar geomagnetic latitudes. These colourful lights form when particles from the Sun collide with gases high in Earth’s atmosphere, and 2026 is shaping up to be a brilliant year for aurora-spotting as the Sun reaches a peak in its 11-year cycle.
