The ecologist uncovering the networks that help rainforests recover

At Panama’s Barro Colorado reserve, ecologist Daisy Dent follows forests as they regrow, using more than a century of records to understand why some patches thrive while others remain less diverse. Her research shows how animals such as monkeys, bats, parrots, and agoutis shape forests by spreading seeds. These intricate relationships could help guide a low-cost alternative to planting vast areas with a single tree species: letting forests regenerate naturally where conditions allow. And here’s the encouraging part: such recovery can rebuild rich ecosystems that store carbon and support wildlife and local communities.
