Now, a new biomethane plant in Grottole, southern Italy, is turning agricultural byproducts into renewable gas and fertilizer. Operated by Axpo, it is expected to reach annual output of 45 gigawatt-hours, enough to meet the average gas needs of about 3,200 homes. That could prevent around 9,000 tons of direct carbon dioxide emissions each year compared with natural gas, while making use of existing gas infrastructure. And here's the thing: the project also supports local farms, energy security, and Italy's growing biomethane industry.
