Microsoft uses machine learning to improve long-range weather forecasts

So, Microsoft researchers have developed an open-source machine-learning tool designed to make weather forecasts two to six weeks ahead more accurate. Rather than building a new forecasting model, Probabilistic Bias Correction identifies and corrects systematic errors in existing models, and it can run on ordinary CPUs. In tests, it improved a leading European physics-based model on 98 percent of precipitation targets and 92 percent of temperature targets, while doubling the accuracy of a newer AI forecasting system. That lightweight approach could help farmers, emergency responders, and weather agencies with fewer resources plan further ahead.
