Astronomers measure the moon’s slow shrinkage

So: the moon is shrinking as its interior cools, and new measurements put the change at about 2.4 to 4.3 inches per million years. Using more than 17 years of images from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, researchers also identified over 10,000 visible faults across the lunar surface. Because the moon has one shell-like tectonic plate, cooling can create faults and trigger moonquakes far from any plate boundary. These findings offer a clearer picture of lunar activity and could help NASA plan safer places for a lasting human presence on the moon.
