A Ghent project that uses coots to help remove litter from urban waterways has won a New European Bauhaus Prize. Floating platforms give the birds a safe place to nest, and during nest-building they collect rubbish from the water. After the breeding season, the nests are collected so the waste can be sorted and recycled. The project won in the Rising Stars category for circularity, sustainability and innovation, which comes with a €15,000 prize.
