A new atlas maps mitochondria across the tree of life

So, researchers have created an unprecedented catalogue of mitochondrial proteins from six organisms: five single-celled parasites and one plant. Combining these findings with data from humans and yeast produced a collection of 8,619 proteins, including 33 families found in disease-causing parasites but not in humans. Many proteins in the parasite Giardia remain mysterious, hinting at metabolic processes scientists have yet to uncover. And here’s the exciting part: parasite-specific proteins could point to precise new treatments for illnesses such as malaria and sleeping sickness.
